Beyonce: The Album

Beyonce the Album: The Top Five Reasons Why It Bests All The Rest.

If you've lived on planet Earth over the past week, then you probably heard all of the excitement around the release of Beyonce's newest self-titled album. Secretly released with no advertisement this new album is probably one of Beyonce's most diverse and my personal favorite. These are just some of the reasons I love this album.

1) Diversity of Sound

My biggest complaint about Beyonce was always that her music seemed formulaic. In my opinion once you but one 'Yonce album you've bought them all. But Beyonce breaks the mold with her latest release and creates a diverse listening experience. From slow ballads to chart topping singles Beyonce covers a full spectrum of music.

2) The Music Videos

Along with the album, Beyonce released 17 music videos calling it a visual album. And each one is unique and beautiful in it's own right. This isn't the first time Beyonce has done this, the I Am... Sasha Fierce album also had a video for every song, but unlike earlier attempts every video was perfectly fit for the songs. It's always nice to have a awesome video to go along with the listening experience.

3) The Message

Without giving it all away, Beyonce includes a very feminist message in her album. She reflects on sexuality amongst women, the feminist movement and marriage amongst other things. While not exactly groundbreaking, it's refreshing to see a pop star with a cool message.

4) The Characters

Creating alter egos or multiple characters is a staple in pop music today, but Beyonce was one of the first modern pop divas to create an alter ego. On this album there are many and each one has a different sound. There's Mama Beyonce, sexy Beyonce, Beyonce the wife, Creepy Beyonce, 'Yonce, The Queen and that's just a few.

5) Destroying the Competition

Now I am completely against pitting pop stars against each other. This is a fairly common action in music with the new spotlight on charts and chart placement. But in this case I think that a comparison is needed. In a year when pop mainstays like Katy Perry, Gaga and Britney Spears all released albums, Beyonce decidedly had the best. Other stars spent millions on marketing and Beyonce did no marketing and still had some of the best sales and one of the most complete albums.

Kanye west(Curtis Wilson)

Kanye west has boated his fame with he shoes once promoted by Nike the Air Yeezy's. Kanye west says he broke his deal with Nike because they did not give him definite dates on when the shoes would release and could not give him royalties because he is not a professional athlete. West responded by telling Nike brand that he is a performance athlete and nothing more. Kanye shortly after left Nike and signed with Adidas hoping to release a new version of his well known shoe.

Salt-and-Pepper-Crusted Prime Rib with Sage Jus

Active: 45 MIN

Total Time: 4 HRS

Serving: 10

INGREDIENTS

One 14-pound prime rib bone-in roast, tied

Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper

20 large sage sprigs

20 large thyme sprigs

8 bay leaves

8 shallots, peeled and halved

1 head garlic, cloves crushed, plus 4 cloves thinly sliced

2 cups water

1 onion, thinly sliced

3 tablespoons freshly cracked black peppercorns

1 cup dry red wine

5 cups beef stock or low-sodium broth

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

DIRECTIONS

1.Preheat the oven to 400°. Set the meat in a large roasting pan, fat side up. Season the meat generously with salt and pepper. Around the roast, scatter 10 sprigs each of sage and thyme, 6 of the bay leaves, the shallots and the crushed garlic cloves. Pour in 1 cup of the water and roast for 45 minutes. Reduce the temperature to 275°. Roast the meat for about 2 hours and 15 minutes longer, adding the remaining 1 cup of water to the pan as the juices evaporate. The roast is done when an instant-read thermometer inserted in the thickest part registers
135°.

2.Transfer the roast to a large carving board. Pour the fat in the roasting pan into a large heatproof bowl, stopping when you reach the syrupy pan juices at the bottom. Pour the pan juices into a small bowl and discard the vegetables and herbs.

3.Set the pan over 2 burners and add 2 tablespoons of the reserved fat. Add the onion, peppercorns and the sliced garlic, remaining 2 bay leaves and 10 sprigs each of sage and thyme. Cook over moderate heat until the onion is softened, about 8 minutes. Add the wine and cook, scraping up any bits stuck to the bottom and sides of the pan. Pour the mixture into a medium saucepan and bring to a boil over high heat. Add the beef stock and pan juices and cook over moderate heat until slightly reduced, about 15 minutes.

4.In a small bowl, whisk the flour with 2 tablespoons of the reserved fat. Whisk the paste into the saucepan and simmer the gravy until thickened, about 5 minutes. Strain the gravy through a fine sieve and keep warm until ready to serve.

5.Cut the bones off the roast and slice the meat 1/2 inch thick. Cut in between the bones and serve them on the side. Pass the gravy at the table.

My Christmas Tradition-December, Eric Murphy

Christmas is fast approaching and everyone is excited. some are excited to visit family they haven't seen for a while, some just want to get out of school and others (especially seniors) feel this is an important time to start applying for colleges and scholarships.I, however have something else to look forward to. Every Christmas morning we wake up open a few of our presents and then we go to my grandmother's house. Here we enjoy the annual traditional Christmas breakfast. This tradition brings family together to celebrate the joys of giving (and a little bit of receiving), as well as telling each other what they got for Christmas, Christmas specials of cartoons and movies, as well as what they plan to do for the rest of the holidays. This  year is definitely special as this is the last Christmas I will spend with my family as  High School Student. Next Christmas I will have finished my first semester of college and will be able to discuss with my family all the details of what I have experienced in my first few months away from the security of my family and how I have adopted to the college life.

From Jerk to Twerk

In middle school, we all particpated in those crazy dance fads and today is no different! In the old days, we "leaned and rocked" ; "walked it out" and "Jerked!". Toady we are twerking, "nae-nae-ing" and "South Dallas Swagin." Nothing has really changed but the times. Today, I learned how to jerk and I must say I am proud of myself becuase I'm uncoordinated. In excahnge, I taught my friend how to "Nae-Nae" and do the dance calle the "stanky leg." GREAT DAY AT THE MOUNTAIN!

Spirit of Black Friday

Black Friday. A tradition that many of us became familiarized with because of its special characteristics, waking up at 3 a.m., fighting over television sets, and of course most notably finding ahhmamzing deals. Black Friday has been like this for as long as many of us can remember, but what about future generations? It has become quite common for many stores to start their sales on Thanksgiving afternoon in opposition to the common Friday morning. many complain that this is a bad idea for many reasons. Some including less time spent with families for the workers and shoppers. Others complain that this takes away from the typical Black Friday traditions. this however did not stop shoppers from participating in their typical black Friday behaviors. Walmart sold over 1.4 million tablets, but that's not what people were raving about. The popular deal this year was apparently a towel that cost 29 cents!! This apparently led to several fights but resulted in the sale of 2.8 million towels. I guess some Black Friday traditions will just never die down. -Daysha

Mobile game of the month- Eric Murphy- November

Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP (Capybara Games)iOS- if someone ever wanted to find a good mobile game, they would have to search through the countless garbage and games that are pretty copies of other games, but if you ever searched long enough you would be rewarded with an excellent game experience. Sword and Sworcery EP IS THAT GAME. presented in a charming and gorgeous 16 bit style, the game manages to bring out the best in your apple device while still managing to capture that retro feel from gaming decades gone by. You are a girl from a tribe of people called the Scythians.you set off on a quest to seal a deathless spectre who threatens the world like many of your other ancestors have done.narration is told through ominiscient unnamed character who watches the scythian as she attempts to reach her goal. The game features clever puzzles that use the touch screen and gyroscope of your iphone, itouch or ipad in creative ways that you may not have seen in other mobile games. The game will take most people three to four hours to complete, which is a pretty long time given the one to two hour (at most) time sinks that a lot of other games on the app store will provide.

Christmas Around the World-NaKayla Williams

Lights shining bright as the sun, a mountain of presents under the tree, garland wrapped around the staircase, milk and cookies for Santa, and a reef on the door to complete a tradition celebrated for years. But Christmas is more than just giving presents and a big dinner, but a time where families gather together and spend time with one another. A holiday that dates back to the biblical era, Christmas is one of the most celebrated holidays in America. But what about outside of America? How is Christmas celebrated in other countries? Is Christmas celebrated in other countries? America is known as the melting pot filled with people of different races, religions, and beliefs, but yet we do not take interest in their culture and traditions. So let’s take a trip around the world and see how “Merry Christmas” is said in a different language. Traveling down south 2804.28 to Latin America, Christmas is known as Las Posadas, Navidad and Dia de los Tres Reye. Throughout the season there are many bright flowers and beautiful nights. They sing Christmas carols and eat many of the traditional holiday food influenced by the indigenous people of the land and the arrival of the Roman Catholics hundred years ago. Christmas is centered on the story Nacimiento, Christ's Child just like America centering Christmas on the birth of Jesus in the manger. Inside Latin America in Argentina where Merry Christmas means Feliz Navidad. In Argentina most families go to church and then come home for a big feast. At midnight they toast and the adults dance while the children play and watch the fireworks. The houses are decorated with beautiful long red and green garland. Similar to American tradition dinner consists of roasted turkey, roasted pork, but Argentina adds a little twist adding Christmas's bread and puddings and stuffed tomatoes, mince pies. Their toast(drink) is made of different fruit mixed with cider and juice. 6575 miles east of Argentina off the coast of Africa is the Congo. Christmas is first celebrated with carolers singing through the village. Their voices are heard through and fro all the villages waking up Africa to get ready for their early morning church service. They have a love offering in church as a gift to honor Jesus. Then at about 8 or 9 o’clock they make way for the celebration of Jesus’’ birthday. After service dinner is served. Enough tables are served for everyone so every intimate friend is invited. But even before all the celebration the Congo prepares for a Christmas pageant to be put on during dinner. Further down south, Christmas is no longer greeted with snow and freezing temperatures but the hot blazing sun, as it is a summer holiday. Instead of hitting the beach, the people in South Africa are hitting the beach. School is closed and gorgeous flowers are bursting out at the seams. On Christmas Eve, the carolers make their rounds and church services are held on Christmas morning. At home, pine branches are used as decorations and stockings are put up for Father Christmas. Depending on what part of Africa Merry Christmas can be said as Geseënde Kersfees, Een Plesierige Kerfees and, Rehus-Beal-Ledeats. Continuing going 6537 miles west across the India Ocean to Australia , Christmas is also hot. A traditional dinner includes turkey, ham, and pork and a Christmas plum pudding for dessert which usually contain gold nugget. Their dinner usually takes place on the beach or other familes have a picnic. If one decides to stay home , the day is completed with swimming, Crircket, and various outdoor activities. The unusual warm weather allows the people of Australia to practice their tradition of Carols by Candlelight which started in 1937. It is held every year on Christmas Eve. Thousands of people gather in Melbourne to sing their favorite carols. The night is lit by hundreds of candles. Making the night even better, the Southern Cross stars shine bright in the night mirroring the light of the candles. They surround themselves with Christmas Bush, a native plant with red flowered leaves. Heading north to Asia, the little children of China decorate their trees with colorful ornaments. They are made from paper in the shapes of flowers, chains and lanterns. They hang stockings hoping that, Dun Che Lao Ren, which is Chinese for “Christmas Old Man” or Santa Clause, fills them with treats and gifts. They call this season the Spring Festival in which they celebrate with many appetizing meals and pay respects to the ancestors. The children are the main focus, as they are in every country on Christmas, they receive new clothes and toys while eating and watching firecrackers. In India, mango and bananas trees are decorated. They light small lamps as Christmas decoration and fill their churches with the poinsettias. They are perfectly yin bloom during Christmas time. They give presents to their family members and to charity. In southern India the Christian put small clumps of clay of the rooftops of their house just as the Hindus do in a celebration called Diwali. Westward toward Europe, Christmas in England is similar toward America’s. They enjoy beautiful music and hang up evergreen tree branches. They have a custom called mummering where they act out Christmas plays while wearing masks. Their Santa Clause is known as Father Christmas. He wears a long green and red robe and leaves presents in the stockings or pillowcase on Christmas Eve. The day after Christmas is known as Boxing Day because the young boys go around collecting money in clay boxes. Their dinner is ate midday and consists of turkey with vegetables and sauces. For dessert rich, fruity Christmas pudding with brandy sauce is served and mince pies, pastry cases filled with a mixture of chopped dried fruit. In France, the children leave their shoes by the fire place in hope of Pere Noel filing them with gifts. In the cathedral square the story of Christ is reenacted in by both players and puppets. Christmas trees are not really a tradition held by the French, but they do eat this cake called the buche de Nol, which means "Christmas Log”. In southern France is a log is burned in the home from Christmas Eve till New Year’s Eve. On Christmas Eve churches and cathedrals ring out carols with church bells. In the north of France, gifts are given on December 6th instead of Christmas day and the adults give/receive gifts on New Year’s. Christmas is more than just a holiday for giving gifts, but a time to worship and spend time with the ones who has made that year special. Christmas can be celebrated in a million of creative , fun ways that involvess huge feasts , carols, and worship. So Shuvo Naba Barsha, Sheng Dan Kuai Le, Joyeux Noel, Fröhliche Weihnachten, Buone Feste Natalizie, and Merry Christmas to all.
